I am a lawyer who sees the law from all sides. I am experienced and comfortable playing a variety of roles. I am a trial dog who is happy to challenge the other side’s evidence in open court. I am an appellate lawyer who loves the intellectual exchange that leads to the development of the law. I am a post-conviction and habeas corpus practitioner who never tires of digging for the missing pieces in the story of justice. I am a trusted advisor to businesses and organizations carving out their niches on the expanding frontiers of the law. Most of all, I am a knowledgeable, aggressive, and client-centered advocate.
I was educated at Reed College (BA in History 1995), the University of Oregon (MA in History 2000), and Lewis and Clark Law School (JD and Certificate in Criminal Law and Procedure 2004). From 2002 to 2004 I was a law clerk for the Portland Federal Public Defender’s Office. From 2005 to 2008 I was a staff attorney at the Metropolitan Public Defender, handling misdemeanor, minor felony, and major felony cases.
I opened my practice in July 2008. I am admitted to the bars of the state of Oregon, the United States District Court for the District of Oregon, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. I am a member of the Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
In addition to representing clients from all walks of life on matters big and small, I do my part to advance the development of the law. I have written or co-written chapters of OCDLA's Major Crimes and Defenses, Felony Sentencing in Oregon, DUII Trial Notebook, and Criminal Law Formbook. I have served on OCDLA’s Legislative and Amicus Committees, on the Multnomah Bar Association’s Court Liaison and Continuing Legal Education Committees, and on the Executive Committee of the Oregon State Bar's Cannabis Law Section.
When I am not practicing law, I like to spend time with my family and friends, throw parties, travel, bike, backpack, swim, ski, smoke meat, hunt wild mushrooms, garden, and cook. I am a longtime volunteer at several festivals and events, including the Oregon Country Fair, SOAK, and Burning Man.
